Children and Young People
Children & Young People's Programme
Derry City and Strabane District Council is the only council partnered with the children’s rights organization UNICEF.
With one of the youngest populations in the country, The Children and Young Persons Officer holds a key role within the Community Services Section of the Council’s Health and Wellbeing Department.
Overall our vision is to become instrumental in tackling specific issues that affect our Children and Young People and improving the lives of all Children and Young People within the Derry City and Strabane Council area through active engagement and participation within the local community. Our focus is on promoting health and well-being, tackling poverty, supporting education, and the safe guarding of our children and young people.
Supported by representatives from the Children and Young Persons Sectoral Working Group our officer is responsible for the implementation of Derry City Council’s Children and Young People’s Action Plan 2012-15, which aims to tackle specific issues affecting our younger population throughout the Council area.
The plan demonstrates Council’s commitment to mainstreaming the Child Rights agenda within our policies and services, and the Children & Young People’s Officer’s remit is defined more fully in the detail of the action plan which is available electronically here.
Working with our partner agencies including UNICEF, Derry City and Strabane District Council will continue to be pro-active in encouraging participation and engagement with children, young people, parents, carers and communities in identifying priorities within our district and how these should be met.
We remain committed to promoting and improving an effective interagency/partnership approach to delivering better outcomes for our children and young people, and the achievement of better, brighter futures.
