The Mayor’s Foyle Challenge invites swimmers of all abilities to take part in a unique charity open-water swim along the River Foyle on Saturday 16th of May 2026. Choose between a 1 km or 3 km swim route, each supported with full safety cover on the day.

This event aims to raise funds for the Mayor’s chosen charities while showcasing the beauty and spirit of our river. All participants must be aged 16+ and confident swimming their selected distance in open water.

Further details, including wave times, safety information, and pre-event briefings, will be shared with registered swimmers closer to the date.

Ticket Type  Ticket description
3km - Experienced Open Water Suitable for confident open-water swimmers with regular training. You must be capable of completing a 3 km river swim and comfortable in tidal conditions. Attendance at the mandatory safety briefing is required.
Min age: 16+ (under 18s require parental consent).
3km - Intermediate Open Water Ideal for swimmers who have some open-water experience and can complete a 3 km distance at a steady pace. 
Mandatory briefing and age requirements apply.
1km - Competent Open Water Designed for competent pool swimmers or those newer to open water. You should be able to comfortably swim 1 km. 
Mandatory briefing and age requirements apply.
