Mayor honoured at special community Mass in St Patrick’s Castlederg
12 May 2026
A special Mass was held on Sunday at St Patrick’s Church in Castlederg to celebrate Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh’s year in office.
The event was also held in recognition of the dedication of community workers and volunteers across the Derg area.
Mayor McHugh described the event as one of the most memorable moments of his year in office.
“While I have been fortunate to attend many wonderful events across the City and District during my term, to be recognised in my own community and in the parish where I grew up made this occasion especially meaningful,” he said.
The Mayor thanked Fr Paul Fraser for leading the Mass and acknowledged the contribution of local young people who played a central role throughout the service.
Special thanks were also extended to members of Castlederg St Eugene’s GAC and St. Patrick's FC who formed a guard of honour for the occasion.
Following the Mass, refreshments were served in the Parish Hall, where attendees gathered to continue the celebrations and support the Mayor’s two chosen charities through donations.
The Mayor expressed gratitude to everyone who attended the event, contributed refreshments, volunteered their time and supported the charitable collections.
