Swimmers brave icy waters for Mayor McHugh’s Challenge at Creggan Country Park

18 May 2026

Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, has thanked everyone who participated in and supported his Mayor’s Swim Challenge at Creggan Country Park today.
More than 100 swimmers and hundreds of supporters attended the event, which raised vital funds and awareness for the Mayor’s chosen charities, PIPS Suicide Prevention Ireland and the Castlederg Patient Comfort and Terminally Ill Fund.
The Swim Challenge, organised in partnership with Derry Ultra-Endurance Athlete and Mental Health and Wellbeing Campaigner Danny Quigley, saw swimmers complete either a 3km or 1km open water swim in challenging conditions, cheered on by supporters, volunteers and family members throughout the day.
Speaking after completing his own 1k swim, Mayor McHugh praised the determination and spirit shown by everyone involved.
“This was a special and emotional event that brought people together for two very important causes,” he said. “I want to sincerely thank every swimmer who took part, everyone who donated and all the volunteers and staff who helped make the day such a success.
“The atmosphere at Creggan Country Park was fantastic and there was a real sense of encouragement, positivity and community spirit throughout the event.
“While the challenge recognised the pain and loss experienced by many families connected to our waterways, it also highlighted the importance of hope, resilience, mental health awareness and the positive benefits of physical activity and connection.”
“Open water swimming is physically and mentally demanding but events like this show the strength that comes from community support and shared purpose.”
Mayor McHugh also thanked Event Host Mickey Doherty, the team at Creggan Country Park, Council staff, Foyle Search and Rescue, Foyle Port, swimming instructors, emergency support teams and volunteers for ensuring the event was delivered safely.
