Open Call for Steering Group Members

The Ubuntu Festival is an established one day event by Derry City and Strabane District Council celebrating different cultures and traditions from around the world which has been running for the last 7 years. This festival showcases different cultures through the medium of music, song, dance, dressage and traditional cuisines. DCSDC and the events team have worked with local BAME groups to deliver this festival in recent years. The Ubuntu Festival has been mainstreamed into the Council’s Spring Festival alongside other celebrations such as the Legenderry Food Festival and St. Patrick’s Day. Ubuntu Global Festival has proven to be a huge success with many traditions and cultures being represented.

Local Ethnic Minority groups have embraced the festival as have local people.  They have enjoyed learning about other cultures and traditions.  The Festival has gained momentum in recent years as it has become established.  It is hoped that this trend will continue in the future and that the festival will become an established part of the festival programme offering for DCSDC.

A recent consultation around Ubuntu ‘One World Festival’ with BAME groups took place across the Derry City and Strabane District on how the festival can be improved/developed and how other services in relation to BAME can be improved. As part of this consultation, stakeholders felt a steering group should be re-established in which they can feed into the development of the programme and the festival becomes more co-design. Derry City and Strabane District Council would now like to take this opportunity to invite people from BAME communities to become a member of a steering group to have their say on how this festival could be improved or developed.
