Appeal to students to stay safe this Halloween

30 October 2020
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Brian Tierney, has appealed to students across Derry and Strabane to be safe and sensible this Halloween weekend.
Cllr Tierney said that while he understood Halloween was normally a great time for celebration for the local student population, he asked that this year they seriously consider the health guidelines and government restrictions in place.
As part of this appeal, members of Council's Community Safety Warden team joined with staff at Ulster University's Magee campus in a video message.
"I know that this weekend would typically be a really exciting time for our students living in Derry and the wider district, but I am asking them to please be safe and sensible with any celebrations they're planning," said Mayor Tierney.
"Hosting or attending house parties is not acceptable at the current time as we continue to battle Covid-19, so I would ask all of our young people – and everyone across Derry and Strabane – to celebrate at home, within your own social bubble.
"There are plenty of online events and activities to enjoy as part of Council's virtual programme, so please follow the guidelines, protect one another, and enjoy Halloween at home with those in your own household."
