Artisans wanted for new Strabane market!

08 March 2017

Local artisans and craft artists are being invited to take part in a pilot for a new market in Strabane aimed at showcasing some of the very best food and craft design work from the town.

The market will be run by Derry City and Strabane District Council, and if the pilot is successful will see regular monthly trading in the town centre.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock, called on established traders in the Strabane area to support the new market. “I am delighted to see Council progressing with this pilot, which will add to the retail offering in Strabane town centre.

“It will provide an opportunity to highlight the work of some of the many specialised artisans and designers working in the Strabane and surrounding areas. I would really encourage anyone in the local area involved in local produce or craft to find out more about how they can sign up.”

It’s envisaged that the market will take place on the last Friday of every month, beginning at the end of April, and it is hoped that the facility will attract around 12 regular local traders, offering a wide range of local products. The project follows on from the success of the recently established Walled City Market which takes place on the first Saturday of every month in Derry, as Markets Officer Nicolle Walters explained. “The Walled City Market has been extremely well received among local traders and generates a steady influx of local shoppers and visitors to the city centre each month. Following on from this success there is now the opportunity for more local traders in Strabane to establish a monthly market that is unique to the area.

“It’s hoped this will complement the existing retail offering in the area and offer the chance for smaller artisan suppliers to sell their bespoke goods and products. If the pilot is successful this will be a fantastic additional attraction to boost trade and footfall in the town centre.”

The market will operate from 11am to 4pm, and will be located in the courtyard area of the Alley Theatre. Trading opportunities are limited and traders will be subject to a selection process which will take into account the types of goods, their speciality nature, and previous experience. Applicants will be expected to participate in the project for ten months initially beginning on Friday April 28th.

Application forms and selection criteria can be obtained from www.derrystrabane.com/publicnotice or by emailing [email protected] or contacting Council’s Business Section on Tel: 02871 253 253 ext: 6664.

Closing date for return applications is Friday 17th March at 12noon.
