Competition opens for new Mayor’s gift ideas

07 May 2015

Local artists and makers are being invited by the Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Elisha McCallion, to come up with some special locally themed gift ideas suitable for presentation throughout her year in office.

The range of gifts will vary from smaller design items to larger presentation pieces, and Mayor McCallion is hoping to find designs and products which reflect the new council area.

“I am delighted to open up the competition to our many talented local artists, crafts people and designers,” she said.

“We have a thriving arts community and we should all support local businesses in terms of producing work which enhances the profile and image of our city and district. It’s a fantastic opportunity to provide visitors to the North West with some special bespoke design items referencing our culture, heritage and location as well as the wealth of creative talent we have on our doorstep.

“I would invite anyone with a design or product with a distinct local feel to submit it for consideration over the coming weeks.”

The designs should reflect the new wider Council area encompassing both Derry and Strabane, however the panel may also consider designs representing the separate Derry and Strabane areas.

Craft Development Officer with Derry City and Strabane District Council, Deirdre Harte said: “This is a great chance for local artists to showcase their work and represent their council area.

“I would encourage anyone with a unique design concept to submit it for consideration and the opportunity to showcase their work to visitors from all over the world.”
There are two options for artists and companies to submit their work, either as an outline design for a product range or as a bespoke handmade craft piece.

The applications will be assessed by a panel led by the Mayor, and the competition is open to anyone residing or owning a business in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

For more information on the full criteria for submissions or to access an application form please contact Karen Henderson by email to [email protected] or telephone 02871 253253.

Applications must be submitted by 5pm on Friday 29 May 2015 to Karen Henderson at Derry City and Strabane District Council, 98 Strand Road, Derry~Londonderry, BT48 7NN.
