Council Urges People to Support Waste Reduction Week

20 November 2015

Derry City and Strabane District Council is encouraging local people to support the European Week for Waste Reduction (21st – 29th November 2015) Northern Ireland by pledging to take actions to reduce their food waste.

In Northern Ireland the main focus is on helping householders make the most of food and saving money through the Love Food Hate Waste message.

Julie Hannaway, Waste and Recycling Officer for Derry City and Strabane District Council, said: “Our main aim is to change the rising problem that food waste is creating for both the homeowner and the local environment across Northern Ireland. Throughout Northern Ireland the average family wastes the equivalent of up to six meals per week, which is enough to feed one person in that household almost every day of the week!

“Food waste is costing Northern Ireland families as much as £700 per year and the sad fact is that most of this food wasted could have been eaten!

“Derry City and Strabane District Council really believes that by making simple changes to your daily or weekly routine cutting down on food waste, and saving money in the process, needn’t be a challenge. It can be as simple as preparing a meal plan for the week, or getting to grips with our portion sizes; it needn’t be a massive change to your normal routine.”

She ended by adding: “We do realise that there will always be a certain amount of food waste remaining from our households such as peelings, egg shells and tea bags, but we would encourage householders to make use of their compost bins and food waste bins to ensure that this waste doesn’t end up in landfill.”

To help you save money and take action during the week here are some top tips below:

- Check what's in your store cupboards, fridge and freezer before buying more

- Plan your meals for the week ahead, using up what food you already have
