Council announce autumn arts ‘roll-out’ for Strabane
25 September 2017
Derry City and Strabane District Council have announced a ‘roll-out’ of arts and crafts workshops taking place in Strabane over the autumn months which will cater for the young and old alike – including props-making in the run-up to Hallowe’en, and a host of other workshops in photography, ceramics and traditional music.
As autumn days are drawing in, arts and crafts activities are a fun way to help keep your mind and body healthy. The Council is offering a variety of daytime courses for adults and children alike in Strabane – from 1 day to weekly workshops.
Artist Sheila Byrne, on her first time in Strabane, is taking a 4-week Saturday props-making workshop which is suitable for all ages, young and old – a fun family project. Learn to create Halloween props and possibly see your handy workshop activity on display at the theatre’s auditorium over the Hallowe’en pantomime. There are limited places available on this free workshop commencing 30th September.
A one-day photographic workshop will also be held in The Stables in Sion Mills on Saturday 30th September with Northern Ireland’s first dedicated photographic gallery ‘Belfast Exposed’. Part of the day is learning to use your camera fully and spending time outside composing photographic shots. Belfast Exposed can supply professional cameras for people to use, so just mention this when you book a place at the Alley’s Box Office.
Alongside arts workshops are craft classes by a number of local crafters – starting off with ceramics with Leona Devine in October and as we get closer to Christmas other artists from the Studio One Collective are offering Christmas crafts in their own unique styles.
Not forgetting our younger residents we have a free ‘drop-in after school’ workshop, for National Poetry Day in Strabane Library on Thursday 28th September with Michelle Garvey.
Celebrate traditional music with the Johnny Crampsie Music Workshops with local musicians Ann Marie Devine, Lauren Hegarty and Christy Murray from 2pm-4pm, 21st October and a number of short and long arts/crafts workshops for the children over the Halloween holidays.
These workshops start in late September / October so check out the Alley Theatre website www.alley-theatre.com for more details or speak to Box Office staff on 02871384444. Don’t miss out on these and our children’s workshops for Hallowe’en!”
