Council buildings to light up for World Parkinson’s Day

11 April 2022

Council buildings across the district will be lit up in blue this evening to mark World Parkinson’s Day.
The Guildhall, the Alley Theatre and the Strand Road Council offices will all be illuminated in blue to mark the occasion and to help raise awareness of the neurological condition.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Graham Warke, said he was pleased to facilitate the request to light up council buildings in support of this important cause.
“By lighting up the Guildhall, the Alley Theatre and our offices, it allows us as a council to show our support for World Parkinson’s Day and for all of the people in our district who are living with Parkinson’s or who have been affected by it.
“I had the pleasure of meeting some of the members of the Parkinson’s Foyle Branch earlier in my term as Mayor and I was really touched by their stories of how the condition has changed their lives and how they have had to adapt.
“It’s really important that we share those stories far and wide and we continue to raise awareness of this condition which affects almost 4,000 people across Northern Ireland. It is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world so we should all be taking the time to educate ourselves more on what Parkinson’s is, how to spot the signs and the ways to treat it.”
