Council gives green light to Rockmills redevelopment plans

Members of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Committee approved full planning permission and provided listed planning consent to redevelop accommodation units at Rockmills on Derry’s Strand Road, at their meeting at the Guildhall today, Wednesday, 05 October.

The application was for the development and remodelling of the existing 85 existing shared living accommodation units into 94 self-contained dwellings at Rockmills, 26 Strand Road, Derry and includes plans to provide new road surfaces, parking layouts and hard and soft landscaping on the site.

Members of the Planning Committee were informed at the meeting that the development will include three 4 persons/3 bedroom apartments for family use; 21, 4 persons/2 bedroom apartments for small family use; 66, 2 person/1 bedroom apartments for couples and 4/ one person one-bedroomed apartments for single persons and will be managed by an independent social housing provider, ‘Choice Housing Association LTD.

The Chairman of the Planning Committee, Cllr John Boyle welcomed the planning approval saying it was a welcome boost to housing provision in the city centre providing a mix of housing to offer choice in a living environment that is central to local facilities and amenities.

Derry City and Strabane District Council‘s Chief Executive, John Kelpie said this application was another positive example of the successful delivery of the Council’s new planning role. He added that the development would also provide a welcome boost to the local economy in terms of providing construction jobs during the development phase.
