Council offices in Derry and Strabane will be lit red this Friday October 21st in support of Black History Month and Show Racism the Red Card's Wear Red Day.
Black History Month aims to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black people not just in the UK and Ireland but around the world.
It follows a motion at Full Council, unanimously approved by Elected Members, for the buildings to be lit red on the date which is also a national day of action against racism where football teams, Councils and young people across the UK will wear red and stand in solidarity against racism.
"I am delighted that our Council offices in Strand Road and the Alley Theatre will be lit red to show our support for Black History Month that aims to recognise the achievements and local contributions of people of African and Caribbean heritage.
"On Show Racism the Red Card Day it serves as an important reminder that we strive to be a City and District that celebrates diversity, welcomes people from all backgrounds and stands in solidarity with anyone who experiences racism."
During October, the North West Migrants Forum are hosting a series of events and presentations to call attention to the importance of Black History Month.
The highlight will be the Black History Month Summit on the Saturday October 22nd, in St Cecilia's College which is being held for the second successive year in Derry.
The event will feature guest speakers and a feast of food from different cultures, and will celebrate the rich and varied cultures of people of African descent currently living in Northern Ireland as well as some of the key issues facing our Black, Asian (BAME) and minority ethnic communities.
Further details of the event and a link to registration can be accessed on the North West Migrants Forum facebook page.
