Council plans summer of fun for active kids

11 June 2015

A jam-packed seven week programme of fun activities to get local children fit and active this summer has just been announced at a range of venues across Derry and Strabane.

The exciting programme has been launched by Derry City and Strabane District Council and is the ideal way for children to learn new skills and make new friends over the summer months.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Elisha McCallion, encouraged parents to check out the wide range of activities on offer.

“As a busy mother myself I am well aware of how difficult it can be to keep children entertained during the school holidays, and more importantly to keep them active. The range of camps offers children of all ages the chance to learn and have fun in a way that’s both affordable and promotes fitness and well-being.

“I would really urge parents to check out the activities which are available at Council leisure facilities in their area, and to book early as the places fill up fast.”

The camps are fully supervised and led by qualified instructors who will teach the children new skills and encourage participation in sports, and the programme includes recreational camps, sports camps and swimming lessons.

Templemore Sports Complex and Foyle Arena will host a series of multi-sports camps from 6th July–21st August for 6 to 12 year olds. The five day camps will feature a wide variety of activities including Judo, Wrestling, Swimming, Football and Arts & Crafts. The Foyle Arena Camp will also include use of the new state of the art Climbing Wall.

Young GAA fans can sign up for the Urban Gaelic Games programme which features a five day GAA summer camp at Celtic Park Stadium from 6th–10thJuly focusing on developing key Gaelic football skills for 8–12 year olds.

For those interested in improving their child’s swimming ability Templemore Sports Complex, The City Baths and Foyle Arena will be offering week-long swimming courses over the summer.

And for talented kids and teens in the Strabane and Castlederg areas, Derg Valley Leisure Centre and Melvin Sports Complex will be running a four week programme of Sports, Arts, Dance and trips for 7 –15year-olds from 3rd – 31st July.
