Council seeks fresh applicants for Paddle Sports Course

12 May 2017

Derry City and Strabane District Council are offering local unemployed people the chance to get out into the fresh air and venture into local waterways with the latest intake of its Kickstart to Work Paddle Sports Course.

The programme offers a qualification as an assistant canoeing instructor and is hosted at the picturesque mouth of Lough Foyle in Moville.

The course begins in June and is part of the Kickstart To Work Maritime Ambassador Programme.

Registration is free of charge and open to anyone who lives within the Derry and Strabane Council area, although it may be of particular interest to people who enjoy the outdoors.

Project Officer at Derry City and Strabane District Council, Geraldine O hEara, encouraged local people to consider the courses, no matter what their previous experience of water sports.

“This is a particularly good time to do the Paddle Sports Course as the climate is milder and, as we have seen in recent weeks, the North West is a beautiful place to explore in the warmer weather.

“We are blessed with fantastic waterways and coastline in our Council area including the River Foyle and Lough Foyle so the opportunity to get to know these places while learning new practical water sports skills under the watchful supervision of experienced coaches is a great opportunity.

“The course is completed in a relaxed, fun environment and usually has a mix of people who are completely new to paddle sports and those with some experience. All transport, training equipment, clothing and food is provided.

“For those with no previous experience in any of the activities, participants will receive full training before progressing to becoming qualified Assistant Coaches in the activity of their choice.”

Candidates for the training must be over 18, unemployed, reside in the Council area and not currently taking part in any other education or training programmes.

For more information on how to apply for the course contact Geraldine O’hEara at 028 71 308466 [email protected].
