Creative writing at The Alley

Derry City and Strabane District Council’s autumn arts classes commence shortly with Michelle Garvey, Ink Wing Academy holding creative writing classes for new or experienced writers over the next four weeks. These Tuesday morning workshops will look at well-known authors, an offer an opportunity to experiment with writing ideas and develop your own poetry skills to unlock the writer within.
Michelle has worked as a teacher and linguist in England before returning to her native town of Castlederg and setting up her own creative business- she has been involved with the Let the Dance Begin project here in Strabane. Michelle will also take a children’s workshop on Saturday 1st Oct with children to help celebrate National Poetry Day.
If crafts and visual arts are more your interest, then we are pleased to offer a variety of one day Saturday workshops with photography with Belfast Exposed who can also supply cameras too, if booked ahead. Mervyn Smith offers a practical hands-on workshop which will look at how to get the best from your camera and look at composition and quality of images produced.
Meantime local artist, Leona Gallen will demonstrate how to use Scrapbooking techniques using paper and fabrics, to develop beautifully crafted folder for all those historical records of family and friends. Leona has worked extensively with older people in various care facilities helping them to create their own pictorial family histories, so this is a project that would interest all adult age groups.
To celebrate Culture night on the 16th September, watch out for free daytime taster sessions and exhibitions held. We have Music to your Ears Men’s session in Strabane library at 11am to 1pm- this is to allow us discuss possible options for this project’s future. While in the afternoon Knit and Natter will be from 2pm -4pm. Newtownstewart’s Library we have an autumn art exhibition opening on Friday morning and this will run for two weeks.
Alongside the adult workshops, we have a number of Children’s projects which include traditional Irish music workshops, as part of the Johnny Crampsie Festival on Saturday 15th Oct with the Muddle Club and towards halloween ,Zombie Comic Storymaking workshops with Danny Mc Laughlin from Revolve Comics.
