Disability Employment Network launch
23 November 2015
Derry City and Strabane District Council will host the launch of the Disability Employment Network at the Guildhall on Thursday 26th November 2015.
The event is designed to raise awareness of the group and raise awareness through the WHSCT website of the important work this group is doing to promote employment and training opportunities for people with a disability within the Council area.
It also highlights the level of practical and financial support and assistance that is available to employers setting up a new business for employees with disabilities.
Deputy Mayor, Alderman Thomas Kerrigan who will officiate at the launch says many employers often underestimate the capabilities and potential of people just because they have a disability and could potentially be missing out on a valuable relatively untapped recruitment.
“This event is about encouraging employers to consider their options more widely when next recruiting or even look at what training or work shadowing opportunities they could offer to people with disability. There will be an opportunity to network or be signposted to other groups and organisations in the Council area who would be more than happy to explore the options with them and support them along this path,” he said.
Kay McIvor, Equality Officer with the Council stated that Council is delighted to be involved in providing the platform for the Disability Employment Network to host this event. “Whilst Council do not have expertise in issues concerning people with a disability it does have a role as a civic leader to work with groups such as the Disability Employment Network and provide a platform whereby they can get this important message of support and help out to employers,” she said.
