Call out for Irish Language artist to create work to celebrate Culture Night
10 July 2020
Derry City and Strabane District Council has announced an open call for an artist to create an original piece in the Irish language to mark Culture Night 2020.
Culture Night is an annual, all-island event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts.
This year's programme will combine a host of virtual and online opportunities for members of the public to engage with culture and the arts.
Ahead of the Culture Night programme which is set to go live on Friday 18 September, the Council would like to hear from artists who can produce a unique piece of work in the Irish language in response to the theme 'Hope in the Dark'.
Erin Hamilton, Irish Language Officer with Derry City and Strabane District Council said: "We're excited to announce this unique opportunity for a selected artist to create a unique piece in the Irish language to mark Culture Night 2020. We chose the theme, 'Hope in the Dark' to allow the artist to reflect on this unprecedented and challenging year and to create a unique work in the Irish language which illustrates how creativity and the arts can inspire hope in the face of adversity. We haven't been specific about the art-form as we're keen to allow the artist space to develop new ideas, but we can see it appealing to artists from a range of artistic and creative disciplines".
Artists are invited to apply for this opportunity by contacting Erin Hamilton, Irish Language Officer at erin.hamilton@derrystrabane.com.
One artist will be selected to take forward their idea. The project must incorporate the Irish language and the proposed work must lend itself to being pre-recorded and/or presented in a virtual online format. This is a small-grant commission with a total value of £300. The finished piece of work will be presented online as part of a wider programme of events on Friday 18th September 2020. The deadline for submissions is Friday 24 July 2020 at 5pm.

Tá fógra oscailte curtha amach ag Comhairle Chathair Dhoire agus Cheantar an tSratha Báin ag lorg ealaíontóir le saothar úrnua as Gaeilge a chruthú d'Oíche Chultúir 2020.
Is imeacht phoiblí bliantúil, uile-oileáin é Oíche Chultúir a dhéanann ceiliúradh ar an chultúr, an chruthaitheacht agus na healaíona. Beidh deiseanna éagsúla ar an chlár i mbliana gur féidir leis an phobal dul i mbun an chultúir agus na n-ealaíona go fíorúil agus ar líne.
Sula dtéann an clár d'Oíche Chultúir beo ar an Aoine 18 Meán Fómhair, ba mhaith leis an Chomhairle cluinstin ó ealaíontóirí ar féidir leo saothar uathúil a chruthú as Gaeilge mar fhreagairt ar an téama 'Dóchas sa Dorchadas.'
Dúirt Erin Hamilton, Oifigeach Gaeilge le Comhairle Chathair Dhoire agus Cheantar an tSratha Báin, "Tá lúcháir orainn an deis uathúil seo a fhógairt d'ealaíontóir roghnaithe le saothar úrnua a chruthú as Gaeilge le ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar Oíche Chultúir 2020. Roghnaigh muid an téama seo 'Dóchas sa Dorchadas' le ligint don ealaíontóir a machnamh a dhéanamh ar thaithí dearfacha agus diúltacha an tsaoil le linn na bliana dúshlánaí seo agus le píosa uathúil as Gaeilge a chruthú le taispeáint an dóigh gur féidir leis an chruthaitheacht agus na healaíona dóchas a spreagadh in aghaidh na hanachana. Ní raibh muid sonrach faoin fhoirm ealaíne mar go bhfuil muid ag iarraidh spás a thabhairt don ealaíontóir smaointe nua a fhorbairt agus síleann muid go mbeidh seo tarraingteach d'ealaíontóirí ó réimse disciplíní ealaíonta agus cruthaitheacha éagsúla."
Fáiltítear roimh ealaíontóirí iarratas a chur isteach don deis seo trí theagmháil a dhéanamh le Erin Hamilton, Oifigeach Gaeilge ar erin.hamilton@derrystrabane.com. Roghnófar ealaíontóir amháin lena smaoineamh a ghlacadh chun tosaigh. Ní mór don togra bheith i nGaeilge agus caithfidh an saothar atá beartaithe bheith in ann bheith réamhthaifeadta agus/nó curtha i láthair i bhfoirm fíorúil ar líne. Is coimisiúin miondeontais é seo le luach iomlán de £300. Taispeánfar an saothar críochnaithe mar chuid de chlár imeachtaí níos leithne atá le bheith curtha i láthair i bhfoirm fíorúil ar an Aoine 18ú Meán Fómhair 2020. Is é an Aoine 24 Iúil 2020 ar 5pm an spriocdháta d'aighneachtaí.
