Enchanting festive procession switches on Strabane Christmas lights
22 November 2021
Hundreds of families lined the streets of Strabane on Saturday as Santa Claus and Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Graham Warke, led a festive themed procession through the town centre to perform the town’s annual Christmas lights switch on.
It was a welcome return to a physical switch on following last year’s virtual event as the procession consisting of festive characters and beautiful bespoke Christmas themed mobile installations from LUXE weaved its way through the town.
The event formed part of Council’s Uncover the Magic of Christmas programme which includes the return of the renowned Walled City Christmas Markets and the Mayor's Magical Christmas Experience in The Alley Theatre and Guildhall.
The procession departed from Dock Street and took in Railway Road, Asda Roundabout, Abercorn Square, Castle Street, Main Street, and Market Street before finishing back at Dock Street.
"I was so pleased that we are able to welcome families back into Strabane town centre for the Christmas lights switch-ons this year." said Mayor Warke.
“It was a magical moment to see the town lit up for the first time and I would like to commend Council’s maintenance teams who have put in place some exciting new lights installations.
"Thank you to Santa Claus for taking time out from his busy schedule to attend the event and he assured me he will return on Christmas Eve to deliver presents for all the girls and boys in the City and District.”
The Mayor's programme begins at Strabane's Alley Theatre on Saturday December 4th from 12pm – 5pm before moving to the city's Guildhall from Friday December 17th until Sunday December 19th.
Tickets are free and will be available to book at www.alley-theatre.com.
