Fun and quirky events to enjoy on Culture Night

09 September 2016

This year’s Derry~Londonderry Culture Night on Friday 16th September promises to be a particularly memorable one with the addition of some fun and quirky events and venues.

Brendan McMenamin, Arts and Culture Officer at Derry City and Strabane District Council commented, “Over forty arts and cultural venues including museums, galleries, cathedrals, studios and libraries throughout the city and district have agreed to open their doors to the public, free of charge for Culture Night 2016.

“Now in its 11th year, Culture Night has become one of the highlights of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s events calendar. This year’s programme is packed full of dance, music, song, film, art, digital events and a series of talks and tours in some of the most historic cultural buildings of the city and district, with some quirky additions to the events schedule.”

Top of the list for those looking for something different is some Laughter Yoga at the Verbal Arts Centre from 6.45pm until 7.30pm. This promises to be a fun and energetic workshop to help release endorphins, reduce stress and connect people.

London Street will be basked in light as Smartswag undertake some creative up-cycling. Those who join them will take part in craft and design classes from 5.00pm until 10.00pm creating contemporary jewellery and decorations from household trash. The winner of best designed award will then win some limited edition prints and jewellery.

As far as creative challenges go, the Yellow Yard will be abuzz with activity beginning from 10.30am with a Wall of Death in Abbazappa Records. View the exhibition of framed album covers and guess how the artists died, then enjoy a death disco with tunes from all your favourite dead artists. Later in the day there will be challenges such as ‘Make Your Own Coffee Cup’ at St. Jude’s Coffee and ‘Design Your Own Book Cover’ at Little Acorns Bookstore, both will take place from 3.00pm until 8.00pm.

A special film screening of the acclaimed ‘Together in Pieces’ will take place at 7:30pm in the Nerve Centre (Refreshments served from 7:00-7:30pm) and will be followed by a Q&A panel discussion. (Please note this is a change of venue from brochure).

Ever wondered what it’d be like to join the circus? Visit In Your Space from 7.00pm until 8.30pm as they’ll be offering taster sessions of circus skills designed to help you develop skills in balance, hand-eye co-ordination, spatial awareness, team work and creativity.

Maybe dancing is your thing? If so, make sure to call to Visit Derry’s new offices in Waterloo Street for some Flamenco dancing from Solas Flamengo from 6.00pm until 8.00pm. You can also pick up brochures with everything that’s going on during Culture Night here.
