Get outdoors and love your greenway!
20 February 2018
Calling lovers of the outdoors? Then why not come and join the Council in exploring the greenways in our City and District at a fun family activity event entitled Love My Greenway, taking place on Saturday 03 March at the Peace Bridge in Derry, (cityside entrance).
Taking place from 11am to 3pm on 03 March, the event will feature a series of fun filled activities for all the family aimed at promoting the greenways and encouraging people to get outdoors, get active and help improve their health and well-being.
Among the activities you can get involved in will be circus skills and drumming workshops and free bicycle checks and tips from experts on how to keep your bike in good condition. There will be animated performers on unicycles and rickshaws throughout the day and an interactive pop up graffiti wall, with the chance to make your own smoothie using a bike powered smoothie-maker.
Local food traders will also be on site selling hot food and local produce and local company Far and Wild will be offering a free Cycle and Food Tour at 11am and 2pm on the day for those who want to see at first- hand what our local greenways have to offer. Spaces are limited on these tours so anyone interested must book in advance by contacting [email protected] Tel:07775911198
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Maolíosa McHugh says the event is a fantastic way of showcasing the greenway space that we have available across the Council area. “The Council has invested significantly on the provision of greenway space across the City and District and its one of the core objectives set out in our Strategic Growth Plan to improve the health and wellbeing of our citizens. This is a really fun way of promoting walking and cycling and an active lifestyle with something for every member of the family to get involved in and enjoy,” he said.
The Walled City Market will also be taking place at Guildhall Square from 11am to 4pm with a vast array of local craft and food producers showcasing their produce. There will be balloon modelling and face painting entertainment for the kids and anyone travelling to the event by bike are advised that they are entitled to a money off voucher that can be redeemed at any of the market stalls on the day. Vouchers can be collected from the Sustrans Stall.
The event which is organised by Council in conjunction with Sustrans, is also encouraging participants to take part in a number of competitions and be in with a chance of winning some great prizes. For more details about the event and the competition visit www.derrystrabane.com/greenway
