Guildhall offers unique historic setting to tie the knot

27 September 2017

Finding the perfect venue for a wedding is one of the biggest challenges faced by couples after the decision to say ‘I do’, and few tick all the right boxes in terms of both practicality and quality.

But now couples have the chance to celebrate their special day right in the heart of the city centre, in the magnificent surrounds of an iconic building steeped in local history. Derry’s Guildhall underwent a major multi-million pound restoration in 2013, which transformed the Grade A listed building, enhancing the many beautiful architectural features that make this civic and social hub so special.

Local couples can now invite friends and family to enjoy the history, warmth, and luxurious surroundings of the 19th Century building which has dominated the city centre since 1890, located within footsteps of the 17th Century City Walls. The neo-gothic style building overlooks the iconic Peace Bridge and splendid River Foyle and its famous stained-glass windows, which capture scenes from local history, have been described as ‘beyond compare’ by those who visit.

With a sweeping staircase and the grandeur of a stunning Main Hall, the building can be used to create any type of special day, from a unique fairy tale wedding to a low key celebration for both marriages and civil partnership ceremonies.

Visitor Services Manager with Derry City and Strabane District Council, Margaret Edwards, said the Guildhall offered a unique setting for some very special moments. “We delight in welcoming couples here at the Guildhall. Whether it’s a marriage or civil partnership, we guarantee that we can make your day even more special. The building features a choice of two unique spaces to suit small and larger scale ceremonies. The Whittaker Suite is perfect for a more intimate ceremony, holding up to fifty guests, while our Main Hall can accommodate up to four hundred guests and can also be booked as a reception space.

“Thanks to its recent renovation, the Main Hall now provides an exquisite celebratory setting. It boasts one of the finest organs in Europe so we can offer something very special and make it available for your musical performances to create a distinctive experience for you and your guests to enjoy.

“With our Whittaker Suite, small does not mean any less special. One look is normally all it takes to see why this room is so appealing, providing the perfect setting for an elegant and bespoke wedding or civil ceremony. Through the beautiful stain glass windows you can see the remarkable Peace Bridge, built as a symbol of hope for the city during a wonderful time of change and catch a glimpse of the River Foyle which sweeps through the city.

“Our professional, dedicated events team are committed to catering for all types of ceremonies. We realise this is an important day for our couples and by choosing the Guildhall you choose a professional, reliable service with the added benefits of that which you cannot buy – history, serenity, exceptional service and beauty. So come and celebrate with us, right in the heart of the city!”
