Have your say on the future of local physical activity, wellbeing and sport

28 February 2022
A series of virtual workshops gauging the public's opinion on the future of physical activity, wellbeing and sport in Derry and Strabane, will take place in the coming days, with just a week left to sign up.
The feedback from the meetings will help shape a new Physical Activity, Wellbeing and Sports Strategy for the City and District over the next five years, being led by Derry City and Strabane District Council. The aim of the strategy is to set out the way forward for Council and local sporting organisations to successfully deliver a diverse range of sporting activities and services. It will align with the objectives of the Strategic Growth Plan for Derry and Strabane and its aspiration to promote health and wellbeing by increasing participation in sport and other physical activities.
A Community, Providers and Education survey has been designed to gain feedback on current services and to identify the future needs of these user groups.
The workshops run from March 9th to 16th, with six opportunities for local user groups to get involved and ensure the strategy reflects the needs of the wider sporting community.
Director of Health and Community with Council, Karen McFarland, encouraged local groups to have their say. "Improving health and wellbeing for all ages is a key concern for Council, particularly as we emerge from the Covid pandemic with a greater awareness of our own health and the importance of leading healthier lives. This is an opportunity for us to refocus our approaches to better living and for everyone to get involved in creating a strategy that meets the needs of everyone in our community.
"The information you provide about the activities of your group will help us ascertain the current picture in terms of what's available and to identify gaps that can be targeted in the future. It's vitally important that we engage with as many people as possible, so we can take the needs of all those organisations into account."
The online workshops and surveys are part of a wider consultation exercise for Council's Physical Activity, Wellbeing and Sport Strategy. Anyone who completes the online survey will be entered into a competition to win some great prizes for individuals and organisations.
Those who complete the Community Survey are in with a chance to win one of three All Inclusive Leisure Memberships while the Providers and Education Surveys both offer the chance to win one of three sports equipment packs worth £100 for your organisation or school.
You can complete the survey now and register for the free online public workshops on the Council website at
The workshops take place on the following dates: Wednesday March 9, 1pm; Thursday March 10, 7pm; Friday March 11, 10am; Monday March 14, 7pm; Tuesday March 15, 10am; Wednesday March 16, 1pm.
