Leading American youth orchestra to perform in the Guildhall, Derry

18 June 2015

The New England Conservatory Youth Symphony Orchestra will stop off in Derry on Sunday 28th June as part of their 2015 tour of Ireland. Under the direction of world-renowned conductor, composer and NEC’s Musical Director, Steven Karidoyanes, the ensemble will perform a free afternoon concert in the beautiful surrounds of The Guildhall alongside local chamber choir, Codetta.

A cultural icon approaching its 150th anniversary, the New England Conservatory, located in Boston, Massachusetts, is the oldest independent school of music in the United States and is recognised worldwide as a leader among music schools. Alumni go on to fill orchestra chairs, concert hall stages, jazz clubs, recording studios, and arts management positions worldwide.

The NEC Youth Symphony Orchestra is composed of advanced young musicians - string, wind, percussion, brass and harp players - between the ages of 13 and 18, selected from hundreds of applicants through annual auditions. The group has performed in many cities around the world and regularly graces the stage of the Boston Opera House.

The Dean and Executive Director of NEC’s Preparatory and Continuing Education faculty said, “A tour like this, introduces these young people to a culture many have never experienced before. Plus, they learn to perform in a variety of venues, meet new people, and understand what it’s like to play and travel overseas. They are expanded as human beings, musicians, and young professionals.”

The programme for the concert will include Handel’s Water Music Suite, Beethoven’s 8th Symphony and Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise. Local chamber choir Codetta, directed by Dónal Doherty, will also perform as part of the concert and look forward to sharing the stage for a performance of Mozart’s Ave Verum.

The concert will take place at 2pm on Sunday 28th June in the Guildhall and admission is FREE.

The orchestra will also perform in The Waterside Theatre on Saturday 27th June at a free concert for primary and post-primary children.
