Local companies urged to explore trade mission opportunities

07 June 2019

Local businesses are being encouraged to tap into new markets by signing up for a special cross-border International Export Programme, geared towards promoting local products and services.

Led by Derry City and Strabane District Council working in partnership with Donegal County Council, Ireland Northwest’s ‘Gateway to Growth International Export Programme’ is financed by The Executive Office and the Irish Government. It is the latest programme in the ongoing collaborative work between the two local councils, who have been working closely with a range of partners to promote the North West region.

Two local brewing companies have just returned from the US where they had the opportunity to connect with similar ventures in Philadelphia as part of an Ireland NW delegation attending the prestigious Craft Drinks event ‘In Good Spirits. Baronscourt Brewing Company and the Muff Liquor Company found the visit to be extremely beneficial in making new contacts across all areas of business development and gaining access to renowned brewers to find out how they developed their produce.

Speaking ahead of the forthcoming trade mission in November, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Michaela Boyle, said the Councils were strongly focused on facilitating market entry for small and medium enterprises who have the ambition and the capacity to enter international markets.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for smaller companies who may have the skill and ambition to take their products and services further afield, but who may be restricted in terms of knowledge and resources,” she explained.

“The Gateway to Growth programme bridges that gap by offering small and medium sized businesses a unique opportunity to engage with the right in-market business influencers and contacts.

“The next US trade and investment mission planned for Philadelphia and Boston this autumn is a great chance for interested companies to successfully internationalise their business. Previous trade missions in the past number of years have been hugely successful in allowing us to raise the profile of the NW City Region to international markets and to assist indigenous companies like Northbound Brewing Company and the Muff Liquor Company to do business in export markets. We are hoping that other enterprises will now see the benefits and sign up to be part of this year’s delegation.”

The programme offers participants a range of support and training taking them through every stage of preparation for their export journey, from identifying opportunity, assessing capability and planning for growth.

Export Insight Workshops are currently being held for any businesses who wish to explore the idea further with the next workshops taking place on Wednesday 12th June, 9am – 2pm at Bishop’s Gate Hotel, Bishop Street, Derry and Friday 14th of June, 9am – 2pm at Mill Park Hotel, Donegal Town.
