Mayor Launches ‘Walls Have Ears’ Summer Animation

11 July 2018

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr John Boyle has launched an exciting programme of summer events which will see the characters, stories and legends that helped shape the story of Derry’s Walls come to life ‘for all who tread upon it’s ancient stones!’

The summer animation ‘Walls Have Ears’ programme is a PEACE IV Tourism Project funded by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) that aims to bring alive the historic walls with stories of ‘secret meetings of kings, plots, rebellion & sieges’ which will encourage dialogue and promote peacebuilding.

Speaking at the launch event, Mayor Boyle said: “I am delighted to launch this fantastic PEACE IV project which will see Derry’s Walls as a ‘shared asset’ enjoyed by citizens and visitors alike.

“Indeed, the ‘Walls Have Ears’ summer animation programme is an excellent addition that will enhance visitor experiences (currently 400,000 a year) and  complement our ambitious new tourism strategy which see the Walls developed as a world-class cultural attraction.

“With over 400 years of history soaked into the brick and mortar of the Walls there is so much to learn about this historic and living monument.

“This summer – from the 14th of July to 30th August 2018, every Saturday, Tuesday & Thursday from 11.30am to 3.30pm – the characters, stories and legends that have shaped its story will come alive for all who tread upon its ancient stones!

“Citizens and visitors alike will witness the stories of secret meetings of kings, plots, rebellion & sieges.  They will also have an opportunity to meet the artistic greats, giants of Victorian industry, political activists and religious visionaries who have all moulded – and been moulded by – the story of our ancient monument.

“Indeed, with hands-on period activities, music, song, and professional Living History theatrical performances, the Walls are definitely the place to be this summer for those wishing to learn more about our shared past and experience history coming to life before their very eyes!”
