Mayor appeals for vigilance following vandalism to trees at Kilfennan Park

11 June 2020
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Brian Tierney, has appealed for the public to be vigilant after damage was caused to trees and a streetlight at Kilfennan Valley Park Greenway.
Three trees were chopped down in the incident along with a lamp post and a saw was found near the scene.
The greenway was opened to the public last summer following a £500,000 upgrade to provide convenient and safe access to local schools and amenities.
Mayor Tierney urged people to respect the facility and for anyone who has anyone information to report it to the Park Ranger.
"I was saddened and disappointed to learn of the vandalism that was committed at Kilfennan Valley Park this week," he said.
"The park has provided a significant addition to the greenway network in the Waterside since it opened last August and has proven particularly popular with walkers taking their daily exercise during the lock down restrictions.
"This is a wanton act of vandalism and an attack on the community who get so much positive use from this asset.
"I would like to appeal to parents to be aware of their children's whereabouts and for the public to be vigilant and report any acts of vandalism in our parks to the Park Ranger on 028 71 341068."
