Mayor calls for Views on Day of Reflection

25 February 2016

The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District is calling on local organisations to register their views regarding a special Day of Reflection, by taking part in a special process of consultation beginning next week.

Councillor Elisha McCallion hopes to remember all those who have lost their lives in times of conflict with the relaunch of a special commemorative plaque for the new council area.

A public event marking the installation of the plaque is also proposed, and Mayor McCallion is extremely keen to hear the views of organisations across the district on the initiative.

“I feel that it is only fitting that the plaque represents all communities across our district, and it’s intended as a tribute for all those who have lost their lives, regardless of race, culture or religion,” she stressed.

“In order to ensure that my Mayoral initiative reflects the wishes of all within our diverse community, I am calling on all groups to offer their views on the proposed Day of Reflection.

“I know that there are many sensitivities surrounding the issue of remembrance, which is why it is so important that we respect and reflect all perspectives.

“The Day of Reflection will not only provide a completely neutral platform to privately remember the past and lost loved ones. But also the opportunity to take part in an inclusive event marking our shared commitment to a brighter, more peaceful future.”

The original plaque was initially installed on the city’s historic Walls in 2004, and will now be reworked and rededicated on behalf of all those living in the new council area on 20th May 2016.

Any agreed event marking the Day of Reflection will be independent of all other public commemorative occasions, and all views are welcome on appropriate ways to mark the occasion.

A series of meetings will take place from Monday February 29th – Friday April 8th at venues across the district to ascertain the views of a wide spectrum of organisations representing the entire community. These include faith based groups, general groups, victims and survivors groups, nationalist and unionist groups as well as local politicians.
