Mayor congratulates local nominees in NILGA Awards

03 December 2019

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Michaela Boyle, has congratulated the four finalists from the local authority who have been nominated for Northern Ireland Local Government Association Awards.
The Awards seek to recognise brilliance in service provision, new initiatives and personal commitment from councils, councillors, staff and partners.
Derry City and Strabane District Council projects are finalists in the categories for Best Local Authority Community Planning Initiative, Best Local Authority Elected Member Development Initiative and the award for Excellence in Environmental Sustainability by a Local Authority.
The initiatives contending for the awards are the Multi-Agency Support Hub, Youth 19, Combating Climate Change and the Member Led Multi Departmental Initiative on Bonfires.
Mayor Boyle said the initiatives were a further example of the innovative and important work that Council Officers and Elected Members carry out daily to improve the lives of those living in the City and District.
“I am delighted that the dedication of our Council Staff and Elected Members have been recognised with their shortlisting as finalists for the NILGA Awards,” she said.
“It is further recognition of the valuable and ambitious work they do to modernise and improve their areas for local communities, businesses and visitors.
“The Local Government Awards are testimony to these services for local people as well as offering benchmarks for wider government and civic society.”
The Awards cover eight categories and sponsor partners / support bodies contributing are: Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE); William Johnston Memorial Trust (WJMT); Enterprise Northern Ireland; Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and Senior Managers (SOLACE); Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA); National Association of Councillors (NAC); Sustainable NI and Tourism NI.
Nominees were judged by an independent panel and the finalist councils in each category will be invited to the Gala Awards Recognition Evening as the culmination of annual Local Government Conference, “The Future of Local Government” at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Belfast, on Thursday 20th February 2020.
