Mayor marks Ramadan weekend celebrations
22 May 2020
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Michaela Boyle has sent her best wishes to all those celebrating the end of Ramadan this weekend.
Ramadan is an annual event in the Islamic community, involving a 30-day period of ritual fasting and prayer. This year it began on Thursday 23rd April and will end tomorrow, Saturday 23rd May.
Mayor Boyle said she hopes that it is a prosperous and positive weekend of celebrations, in spite of current restrictions.
"The tradition of Ramadan is one that takes great commitment, and something that I have always found inspiring.
"With the month of fasting ending tomorrow, I know that this would typically be a time of celebration for the Muslim community, but this is another event that will be restricted due to the current health situation.
"Many in our district will be taking part in Eid al-Fitr this weekend, and I hope that they can enjoy this occasion with family and friends in the safest way possible."
