Mayor pays tribute to Pride of Britain winner

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Brian Tierney is to host a reception in honour of Castlederg’s Pride of Britain 2020 winner, Liam McHugh.
Liam, who was chosen as one of the winners for the special award, in acknowledgement for the work he has done to raise awareness and funds for those who life with cystic fibrosis in Northern Ireland, including this daughter and inspiration, Rachel.
His efforts saw Rachel receive a life-transforming drug for the condition called Orkambi.
In 2019, Liam was one of the key figures behind a campaign which led the Department of Health to confirm its intention to make the drug available through the NHS to eligible patients here.
Mayor Cllr Brian Tierney acknowledging the award and the fantastic work done by Liam for the charity paid tribute to him and congratulated him on achieving this important accolade.
He said: “This is a fantastic achievement and I am delighted that Liam’s hard work and dedication for the charity has been acknowledged. He is a very deserving winner of this award. It is also good news for the charity and the work that Liam has been doing to help raise awareness and much needed funds for research.
He said: “I intend to host a Mayor’s recognition reception for Liam. Unfortunately, due to the corona virus restrictions we aren’t able to accommodate this now but we hope we can do it in the very near future. In the meantime I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Liam and his family and thank them for their commitment and dedication in helping people with Cystic Fibrosis and their carers.”
