Mayor reaches out to the lonely over the festive period

20 November 2020
As the festive season fast approaches, the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Brian Tierney, today launched a new initiative to help alleviate loneliness and isolation.
This year the Christmas celebrations will be greatly curtailed by the ongoing Covid19 situation, which has left many people - particularly in the older community – feeling more disconnected and isolated from family and friends.
Mayor Tierney is now reaching out to anyone who may be feeling the effects, with a compassionate campaign to send a positive message of hope and goodwill to a loved one over Christmas.
Members of the public are being invited to get in touch with the Mayor’s Office to request a personalised Christmas Card from the Mayor to show someone that, despite the changed circumstances this year, they are still in people’s thoughts and hearts over the festive period.
Launching the initiative Cllr Tierney said sending a card was a small gesture, but a heartfelt one that would help to connect people this Christmas.
Christmas is a time to be surrounded by family and friends, and this year more than ever, we have a responsibility to reach out to those who are living alone, or who are shielding due to Coronavirus and may be feeling more isolated than ever,” he stressed.
“At this time we are being asked to protect those around us by staying home and staying safe, but that is a very difficult ask when Christmas traditionally brings us together to celebrate and value family time more than any other time of the year.
“The Christmas Card Campaign is a very simple idea and one that I hope will provide an opportunity to convey our love to others in a safe and positive way. By sending a card people can show they are still thinking of someone and reaching out to send them love and good wishes at this very difficult time. I hope it will bring some comfort and hope to those who are missing the embrace of a loved one or the comfort of being amongst family and friends.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their continued efforts to reduce the numbers of Covid cases locally. Your actions are protecting others, and if we keep up the momentum will hopefully mean we can enjoy some time with family, if in a more limited capacity, this Christmas.”
People are encouraged to contact the Mayor’s Office to provide details of anyone they feel would benefit from a bit of festive cheer by receiving a Mayoral Christmas Card.
Registration opens from 23rd November until 14th December 2020.
