Mayor says huge ‘Thank You’ to ‘Mood Walk’ children from Gaelscoil Ui Dhochartaigh

09 February 2018

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Maolíosa McHugh has said a huge ‘Thank You’ to children from Gaelscoil Ui Dhochartaigh in Strabane who participated in today’s AWARE ‘Mood Walk’.

AWARE is the Mayor’s chosen charity for his year in office – and the charity delivers programmes to children & young people about the importance of looking after their mental health and encourages them to seek help if they feel they are struggling.

Walking is one of the best ways to improve mental health – and pupils were encouraged to wear something bright for the walk or have their faces painted with bright colours.

Children from Gaelscoil Ui Dhochartaigh also presented Mayor McHugh with a cheque (see image 04)  for £161.50 which was raised over two days – the first a non-uniform day on the 8th of January 'Blue Monday', and the second today’s ‘Mood Walk’ during Mental Health Week for Young People. The pupils who are pictured presenting the cheque to the Mayor are (from left to right) Ava, Lexie, and Seimie.

The Mayor is also encouraging any other schools who would still like to participate in this year’s Mood Walk to contact Karen Henderson, Mayoral & Member Services Officer, on 02871 376257 or email [email protected]
