Mayor welcomes additional funding for Covid-19 Recovery Revitalisation Programme
08 December 2020
The announcement of additional funding from the Department for Communities and the Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs through the Covid-19 Recovery Revitalisation Programme has been welcomed today by Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Brian Tierney.
Council have been allocated an additional £155,000 which follows funding received through the programme in August and November from DfC, DAERA and the Department for Infrastructure.
Funding has been used by Council to support businesses and revitalisation in both the district's two main urban areas – Derry City and Strabane Town – as well as rural areas.
Through the COVID-19 Recovery and Revitalisation Grant Scheme, Council have delivered grants to both urban and rural businesses across the district navigating the current challenges of the pandemic. Infrastructural measures have also been implemented to support the business community and to help stimulate economic activity and increase vibrancy and vitality in a safe and accessible manner.
Mayor Brian Tierney said the news of additional funding for the Covid-19 Recovery Revitalisation Programme was well-received at a critical time and will be used to support businesses who have not already availed of the grant scheme.
"I welcome news today that through this programme our Council area will receive a further £155,000 from the Department for Communities, as well as DAERA.
"Businesses within both our city and town centres, and our rural areas, continue to face an extremely challenging climate and this funding will assist us in providing financial support to those businesses who have not yet received funding through the scheme to navigate the weeks and months ahead as we continue the recovery process.
"Boosting the local economy within our Council area is a top priority, as well as promoting and restoring confidence in our city centre, town centre, and our rural areas as safe environments for customers, visitors and workers.
"Through the Covid-19 Recovery Revitalisation Programme we have provided business grants, business engagement events, street life regeneration and an animation programme all of which centres around shopping local and supporting our local businesses as we move forward.
"This new funding will allow us to assist more businesses in creating Covid-secure shopping environments, promoting our district and encouraging all to shop locally with confidence."
