Mayor welcomes local pupils to Guildhall

17 May 2021

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Brian Tierney, welcomed local students to the Guildhall last week as part of the ASPIRE Programme.

Mayor Tierney invited Year 8 pupils from St Brigid's College, Carnhill to the Mayor's Parlour for a hard-hitting question and answer session that covered a range of topics from his biggest achievements as Mayor to how many famous people he has met. The young people then received a tour of the Guildhall taking in the Council chamber and the Whittaker Suite along the way.

Mayor Tierney said it was a pleasure to meet the local students.

"ASPIRE is a fantastic project being delivered in St Brigid's with the Greater Shantallow Area Partnership and a range of partners.

"I was delighted to welcome so many enthusiastic and inquisitive young students to the Guildhall and to hear directly from them about what they wanted to know. There were definitely a few unexpected questions in the mix!

"It was really informative for me to chat with them about how they have found the past year and how their transition from primary to secondary school has been.

"The pupils all seemed to really enjoy their trip and their tour of the Guildhall where they heard lots more about the many interesting artefacts and displays, and about what we do as elected members within the Council chamber.

"It was a really enjoyable few days and I want to thank the boys and girls for their questions and conversation and wish them and everyone at ASPIRE all the best for the future."
