31 March 2021
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Brian Tierney, has welcomed news today that Fort George has been offered as a site for a new Health and Care Centre.
The Department for Communities, which owns Fort George, announced that they have established an agreement with the Western Trust to take over part of the site, with the Trust now moving to develop their proposal.
Mayor Tierney said: "I welcome this news today from the Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey and commend the Department and the Western Trust for moving to this stage on a project that will be a huge boost for this city and the surrounding area.
"This ties in our £250m City Deal which will see a regeneration of the riverfront and which has a large focus on healthcare and innovation in this city and region.
"Not only will this Health and Care Centre see the delivery of high-quality services, but it will create hundreds of jobs and provide a central hub for healthcare.
"Fort George is a vital site for regeneration within this city and district, and this news is a welcome step forward in that."
