Mayor wishes everyone a safe and happy St Patrick's Day

12 March 2021
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Brian Tierney, has said he is hopeful everyone across the district can enjoy a safe and happy St Patrick's Day on Wednesday.
Mayor Tierney said that while it is difficult that we won't have the traditional festivities and parades, it's vitally important that everyone enjoys their day within the government restrictions.
"I just want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy St Patrick's Day this week. As we all know it is typically a big day in our annual events calendar, with the streets lined full of people enjoying our parades.
"Of course, we won't have that this year, but I am asking everyone to please enjoy your day safely and within the restrictions that we are currently under.
"We're around the one-year mark of when the COVID-19 pandemic began and looking back we can see how far we have come. We have made so many sacrifices and have experienced a lot of difficult times along the way," said Mayor Tierney.
"I feel that we are finally starting to come out the other side of that, but we can only keep moving forward if we take the right actions now.
"I am asking everyone across our district to please make those right choices when you are celebrating St Patrick's Day. Please avoid gatherings or mixing households and keep following social distancing.
"I appreciate the efforts that each and every person is making, so let's make all those efforts worthwhile and let's make sure that we keep moving forward in the journey back to normality."
Council bin collections will be operating as normal on St Patrick's Day, Wednesday 17th March, and Council recycling centres will also be open as normal.
Council offices will be closed on Wednesday 17th March and will reopen on Thursday 18th March.
