New ‘Poetry Jukebox’ celebrating C.S. Lewis installed at the Alley
09 August 2019
A new ‘Poetry Jukebox’ celebrating the incredible works of Belfast-born writer & poet C.S. Lewis has been installed at the Alley Theatre in Strabane up until 8th September 2019.
C.S. Lewis was best known for his epic collection of fantasy tales ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’. However, his writing output went much further than this, with over 30 books of both prose and poetry, which has had such an enduring appeal, spanning the generations.
Installed at the reception area of the Alley Theatre, the Poetry Jukebox was curated by Maria McManus & Tade Ipadeola under the title ‘A Deeper Country’ – celebrating C.S. Lewis with contemporary poets responding to his work. The poets featured come from Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland, England, Germany, US, Australia, Canada, Nigeria and Argentina.
Only 52 such jukeboxes exist across global locations and they are placed in streets and areas with the aim of making poetry accessible to all.
‘Poetry Jukebox’ was created by Ondřej Kobza under the project ‘Pianos on the Streets’ – originally from Prague. The project believes that listening to the original voices of poets is one of the most beautiful and inspiring experiences a city or area can offer. Other ‘Poetry Jukeboxes’ have been installed in New York, Kiev, Warsaw, Berlin, Brussels and Lodz.
The project is supported by Arts Council of Northern Ireland through National Lottery Funds and Eastside Partnership.
