Planning approval for play area in Sion

02 October 2019

Members of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Committee today approved planning permission for the reinstatement of a play area in Sion Mills.

Members of the committee approved an application for the play area at 22 Seein Road, Sion Mills, located directly to the south of Parkside Gardens, Sion Mills.

The proposed new play area includes an exciting range of play equipment suitable for all ages and abilities set within an attractive landscape allowing children to interact with nature, enjoying quieter sensory areas alongside more active play.  It also includes seating, picnic benches, cycle stands, accessible paths and boundary fencing.

Welcoming the decision the Chair of the Planning Committee Cllr Christopher Jackson said this is a much needed and welcome investment for the Sion Mills area and good news for families living in the area.

He said: “The importance of play and outdoor activities for children cannot be understated particularly at a time when television and computer games feature so prominently in the everyday lives. The Council is committed to play provision in the city and district and to actively encourage children and young people to get involved in play and an active healthy lifestyle. We are delighted that planning approval has been granted for play park facilities in Sion Mills and believe this Council investment will significantly benefit families in these areas.”

It is anticipated that works will commence on site early 2020.
