Public urged to be aware of where waste is going

29 July 2020

Derry City and Strabane District Council have reminded the public that its Bulky Waste Collection service is for bulky items only.

It follows a number of cases where high volumes of black bags of household waste have been left out for its collection teams during a specially arranged bulky waste collection in local areas in recent days.

Council's enforcement team are currently investigating if the waste was left there by unauthorised waste collection providers who are operating in the Council area.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Brian Tierney, urged the public to only use authorised waste collection services or Council's Recycling Centres when disposing of excess waste as it could lead to prosecution if it is later found illegally dumped.

"Recent special bulky waste lifts in Gobnascale and Culmore have been very successful with many householders taking advantage of the opportunity to dispose of large household items such as furniture and electrical goods.

"Unfortunately there has been some abuse of this service and Council's enforcement team are currently investigating these incidents.

"I would urge the public to be aware where your waste is going, we experienced a surge in fly tipping cases during the recent lock down restrictions which are still being investigated and if your waste is found dumped illegally, even if you gave it to a waste collection service in good faith, you could be subject to prosecution."

The Bulky Waste Collection service is free and items that are accepted include bulky furniture, carpets, lino, electrical appliances, white goods, large toys and mattresses.

Items that aren't accepted are bags of general waste, glass furniture, building materials, fencing, sheds, wooden flooring, bathroom suites, kitchen units, tyres, trees, paint tins and recyclable materials.

Waste that is a result of work being carried out in your home is also not accepted including bathroom suites, kitchens or fireplaces – you should arrange for your building contractor to remove these items or organise removal by an authorised waste collection company or hire a skip.

You can book a Bulky Waste Collection service any time online at or by calling 028 71 374 107.

If you see someone committing the offence of dumping or you come across refuse already dumped you can contact our Waste Enforcement Team on 02871 253253 or email
