REWIRE’s Big Top comes to Guildhall Square for youth celebrations

A fabulous Big Top to be located at Guildhall Square will be the central focus of Derry and Strabane’s biggest ever youth arts festival REWIRE.

REWIRE which takes place from June 26 to July 07, featuring music gigs, spoken word/hip-hop festival, film screenings, discussions, fashion masterclasses, street art comedy and digital is a flagship event for Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Youth 19 celebrations.

The Big Top will be in Derry’s Guildhall Square from next Monday ahead of its first gig - A Comedy Spectacular – that takes place on Tuesday 02 July at 7.30pm. Hosted by local comic Peter E Davidson and featuring some of the country’s funniest comedians, it promises to be a night full of laughs for everyone. Tickets are £5 and is the show is for over 18’s.

One of the highlights of the REWIRE festival is the Big Top Dance event on Wednesday 03 July at 7.30pm, featuring an array of youth dance performers. Everything from contemporary, ballet, modern, musical theatre to hip-hop will form part of this unique showcase put together by a range of locally based community dance ensembles. This is event is free and open to all ages.

You can’t have a Big Top and not have “The Greatest Showman” and the REWIRE festival is delighted to host a special screening of this fabulous musical on Thursday 04 July at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 and the movie is for over 12’s. Fancy dress is strongly recommended!

Radio 1’s Phil Taggart will be joined at the Big Top on Friday evening 05 July to host REWIRE’s Young Blood – the Big Gig. The event kicks off at 7pm and features a host of local artists and performers who are making it big on the music scene. This gig promises to be a must for all music lovers. Among the acts performing will be TOUTS, Roe and three piece all-girl group CHERYLM. Tickets are £5 and the event is for all ages.

Friday night sees Hip Hop coming to the Big Top with the Young Blood: Unspoken event featuring some of Ireland’s top hip-hop acts including Mango X MathMan joining up with local acts such as Waking Android and Hyfin. This is an over 18’s gig that starts at 7.30pm with tickets priced at £5.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Michaela Boyle encouraging the public to come along and support the REWIRE festival, says it has something to entertain young people of all ages and with varying interests.

She said: “There is an amazing line-up of events at venues across the city and district. While the Big Top will be one of the central locations, there will be events at the Alley Theatre in Strabane, the Pilot’s Row Centre, An Culturlann, Killeter Cottage in Castlederg and the Nerve Centre to name but a few. I am delighted that Council is working with youth organisations in our area to put together such a diverse and exciting programme of events. This is a festival created by young people for young people and I wish it every success.”
