Raucous sounds of Barrence Whitfield and the Savages come to the Jazz Festival
19 April 2018
Barrence Whitfield and the Savages are set to bring their unique, wild, electric sound of blues, rock, garage and soul to Derry when they travel from Boston Massachusetts to play at The Rumble Club in Sandinos Bar for the May Bank Holiday weekend to perform at the City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival.
Renowned for their explosive and raucous performances, the Boston based band are expected to take the city by storm when they take to the stage at 10pm on Friday 04 May, during the Festival.
The band have never been to Derry before and are really looking forward to being part of the festival, having heard about it through their agent. Small intimate festivals really appeal to the band and they believe the City of Derry Jazz festival is an ideal platform for them to show off their raunchy musical style in an intimate setting.
Their Derry performance is part of their week-long tour of Ireland in which they will also perform in Belfast and Dublin.
The band’s agent says the jazz festival is one of the highlights of the band’s tour schedule and they are really looking forward to spending time in Derry to view the sights, going out for food and drink and socialising with local people.
They are also very keen to find what the city has to offer and to check out the best local record stores.
The band takes its influences from Blues, R&R, R&B, Rockabilly and Soul and even a little Jazz from the 1940s to 1970s which they make into their own and hope to showcase to the audiences in Derry.
The Savages line-up consists of Barrence Whitfield on vocal duties, Phil Lenker on bass, Peter Greenberg on guitar, Andy Jody on drums and Tom Quartulli on sax. Since the release of Savage Kings back in 2012, the guys have been extensively touring Europe and the USA, including a slot on Later with Jools Holland, performances at The South By Southwest Festival and supporting such acts as Tina Turner, Bo Diddly and The Sonics.
In April 2013, Barrence Whitfield and the Savages became Bloodshot Records Recording Artists and that famed label successfully released their albums worldwide including their most recent release, the critically acclaimed, Soul Flowers of Titan.
The Rumble Club DJ's Beatnik Dan and Hot Rod Todd will join forces with Barrence Whitfield and The Savages for 12 rounds of no-hold barred chaos that will blow the roof off Sandinos Bar.
Barrence Whitfield and the Savages is one of just a number of new and exciting acts confirmed for this year’s event – others include the hot jumpin’ rhythm and blues band The Revolutionaires, Dinosaur, Kaz Hawkins and one of the UK’s most authentic New Orleans style brass band The Heavy Beat Brass Band.
Other new attractions include the Jessica Radcliffe Quartet; an eight-piece ska/reggae band from London called The Dualers; Irish jazz and folk singer, Mary Coughlan; the Swing Cats, Darren Beckett Trio and much much more.
Regular festival go-ers will be delighted to hear that many of their jazz favourites such as The Red Stripe Band, The Ska Beat, Jiveoholics, Cat Scratch Fever Featuring Western Valley Hot Club, Paddy Sherlock and Les Swinging Lovers, The Jive Aces and Harry Connolly Band will be making a welcome return to the festival, bringing with them their unique style of musical performance and personality.
The City of Derry Jazz festival is organised and funded by Derry City and Strabane District Council with support from Diageo and Tourism Northern Ireland.
