Still time for local women to ‘Try a Tri’
28 February 2017
Local women have until this Friday, March 3rd, to sign up for a Derry City and Strabane District Council initiative that will prepare them for a beginner level triathlon in just five weeks.
The Everybody Active Try a Tri programme aims to prepare athletes of any level for a mini triathlon with the training schedule commencing this Sunday morning at Templemore Sports Complex.
The race is scheduled to take place on Sunday April 9th at Templemore and will consist of 10 lengths of the pool (250m), a 10 mile cycle before finishing with a 2 mile run.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock, encouraged as many local woman as possible to take up the challenge.
“This is a unique opportunity to prepare and take part in a manageable length of triathlon under the watchful eye of Council’s Everybody Active coaches,” she said.
“This programme continues the City and District’s rich local tradition of hosting triathlons that includes the Liam Ball and City of Derry events and will allow a wider range of abilities and fitness levels to get involved.
“While some of those who take part may choose to enter a full triathlon in the future, all of them will gain something from the experience.”
Sport Development Manager at Derry City and Strabane District Council Ryan Porter said that the programme was open to any level of athlete and that their training will be tailored to their levels.
“At the first session on Sunday we will have a bike session which will allow us to guage ability levels and organise athletes into smaller groups,” he explained.
“If you have a busy schedule then you are not expected to attend all the training sessions and you can do your own training at a time that suits you.
“The main emphasis of the programme is on participation and it can be a great way to socialise and get fitter in a relaxed and fun environment.”
The cost of taking part in Try a Tri is £30 which includes training and registration for the event and a race top.
