Strabane set to bask in sunshine for Summer Jamm

Strabane is gearing up for its biggest party of the summer this weekend as the popular Summer Jamm music festival returns to local streets and venues.

Sunny skies and high temperatures are being forecast for the family fun weekend which runs from Friday June 22nd to Sunday June 24th and will feature live music and dance, street entertainment, arts and crafts and stalls.

The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Let the Dance Begin’ and Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor John Boyle, encouraged the public to come out and enjoy the packed programme.

“The Strabane Summer Jamm festival has been a big hit with the public in recent years and I am delighted that the organisers have secured a lineup that will suit all tastes this year,” he said.

“This year’s ambitious programme has been extended to three days and with good weather forecast it promises to be a great day out for all the family.

“All the events are free with the exception of those in the Alley Theatre and the Strajamba Music Festival so I’d encourage people to check out the programme online now and get involved this weekend.”

The action kicks off this Friday evening with Iron Maiden tribute band ‘The Seventh Son’ Band supported by local rock band Indecision performing at the Alley Theatre where there is a free beer on arrival for all ticket holders. 

The fun continues on Saturday as North West Regional College invite people to join them onsite for interactive activities from 11am – 2pm and at Canal Basin from 12 – 5pm.

From midday Castle Street, Main Street and Canal Basin will be alive with local dance performances, family fun activities, street entertainers, buskers and food and craft stalls.  Some of the highlights will include Britain’s Got Talent Semi Finalist Duff Balloons, Retro Gaming Arcade, Fire Juggling Unicyclist Mr G Sharp, Bollywood Dancers and Flash dances throughout the day.

Singer song writer Dan Leith will be bringing lots of furry fun in ‘Woofle’ at the Alley Theatre, a 30 minute  show about Dan and his dog with lots of singing, video footage and dancing at 11.30am , 1pm and 2.30pm.  Also in the Alley Courtyard will be the ‘Fu’ Nominal Pooch Day, from 12 – 5pm. Bring your dog for lots of fun with a dog show at 3pm, fun dog  and behavioral classes, pet photo booth, face painting, games, arts and crafts and bouncy castle for the kids.

Enjoy amusements at Cullens Fun Fair  The streets will be full of music from The Wailin Banshees, Jazz Gazette, Strabane Brass Band, Cool Hand String Band and Des & The Whiskey Preachers and lots of original talent from local buskers.

Strabane’s local talent will shine at Strajamba Music Festival in the Canal Basin on Saturday evening organised by BIDS with an impressive lineup including Broken Bandits, GrassRoots Band, Harks, 1980 Something, Dareen Doherty and The Heathen Choir all headlined by the electric The HotHouse Flowers’.

The festival commences on Sunday with a fabulous line up for the ‘Open Air Country Concert’ in Canal Basin, suitable for all the family.  Featuring Shane Owens, Ben Troy, The Ward Sisters, Ryan Turner Band and DJ Sean G.  Come along and jive the afternoon away and enjoy lessons from jiving queen Tammy Love.  Plus there will be food stalls, bar, animation, entertainment and activities from North West Regional College.

The Strabane Summer Jamm festival is organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council and are delighted that North West Regional College is this year’s Education Partners.  The festival is supported by SGN Natural Gas and the Strabane Business Improvement District (BIDS).

Summer Jamm is a free event excluding events in the Alley Theatre and the Strajamba Music Festival. Tickets for the ‘Seventh Son’ Iron Maiden tribute show at the Alley Theatre on Friday night are £10, tickets for ‘Woofle’ on Saturday are £2. Tickets for The Strajamba Music Festival are £5 before the event or £10 on the night.

The ‘Open Air Country Music Festival’ on Sunday is free.
