Science and Innovation Programme launched in Derry

Curious minds and creative thinkers across the North West will be encouraged to get involved in a new project launched today, focusing on opportunities in science, technology, engineering and maths for children and young people.

The Science and Innovation Programme is funded by Derry City & Strabane District Council, Ilex and the Department of Culture and Leisure and features an array of curiosity themed events including The Curiosity Gallery at Ebrington, BT Young Scientist Exhibition, Formula Derr-E, SciFest, Maths Week, Brickwonders, Space Camp and Minecraft Nation.

The city’s Mayor, Cllr Brenda Stevenson said: “During 2013, a five year Legacy Plan was developed by Derry City Council which set our ambition to maximise the benefits of the City of Culture year. As part of this Legacy strategy I am delighted to be launching the Science and Innovation programme - a celebration of the endless possibilities of developing skills through science and innovation. This programme includes a packed programme of initiatives to spark the imagination of our young people and help to develop their knowledge and awareness of opportunities in STEM areas.”

Mel Higgins, Chief Executive of Ilex, said: “The Year of Science and the NW STEM action plan will help us deliver on our priorities in the One Plan, help build the pipeline of young people that the future development of Ebrington and the NW economy requires, and position Derry City and Strabane District as the key region for STEM based jobs and opportunities”.   

Highlight events for the Science and Innovation Programme start in May with the launch of the BT Young Scientist Exhibition at the Curiosity Gallery. This will showcase entries to the BT Young Scientist Competition by secondary school students from Ireland, North and South.

In June, St Mary’s College will host a fantastic 1 day science fair, Scifest, which is open to all second-level students.  The fair will host an exciting competition and exhibition of projects, a prize-giving ceremony and include a selection of science talks, science demonstrations in the college laboratories and advice on careers in STEM and courses.

The Curiosity Gallery at Ebrington is a dedicated gallery space with 3D equipment and exhibitions creating an adventure playground for young and old.  Later in the year, and for the first time in the island of Ireland, the Brick Wonders Exhibition will be showcased for 12 weeks at the Curiosity Gallery. Warren Elsmore’s creation will feature inspiring ancient, natural and modern wonders from around the world, depicted to amazing effect through LEGO® creations of different sizes and scales. Students from across the Ireland will be invited to showcase their creations and enter the All Ireland Brick Wonder Competition.
