Top LEGO Animator to Bring Brick Wonders to Life

The celebrated LEGO animator, Morgan Spence is hosting five one-hour specialised workshops this Saturday, 13th February at the Social Enterprise Hub, at the Diamond, as part of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Brick Wonders Lego Exhibition that is currently on display at the Nerve Centre.

Morgan Spence is a 16-year-old filmmaker from Scotland, who specialises in stop-motion animation, primarily using Lego bricks. Since starting to produce shorts in 2011, his work has been viewed by more than 4 million people globally and he has enjoyed success in creating commissioned videos for the likes of BBC Worldwide and ABC Television, with some of his work featuring on Jimmy Kimmel Live in the United States.

His hands-on workshops, designed to give you an insight into animation using iPads and LEGO models is expected to be a huge draw for LEGO enthusiasts across the North West. The workshop sessions are scheduled to take place at 10am; 11.30am; 1.00pm; 2.15pm; and 3.30pm and are priced at just £5 per session.  Use of iPads will be provided but participants can bring their own if they so choose.

Oonagh McGillion, Director of Legacy with Derry City and Strabane District Council said the workshops are part of a series of educational events being scheduled to complement the Brick Wonders Exhibition that is currently on show at the Nerve Centre until 02 May 2016.

“We are delighted that Morgan Spence has agreed to do these workshops. He is a very talented guy and this is a fantastic opportunity for LEGO enthusiasts in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area to get an insight the work he does and how they too can create some fantastic animation,” she said,

The Brick Wonders Exhibition arrived in Derry last week from Rome for its first showcase in the island of Ireland. The 70-piece LEGO models of the Wonders of the World featuring not only the seven wonders of the world but a range of ancient, modern and historic exhibits, is currently open at the Nerve Centre.

Tickets for the exhibition are selling well and fans are encouraged to book their 90-minute slot in advance to avoid disappointment. Tickets are currently on sale via the Nerve Centre box office on 028 71 260 562 and www.nervecentre.org. Prices: Under 2 yrs Free; Child (2-16yrs) £4; Adult (16+) £5; Family (1 Adult + 3 Children) £15; Family (2 Adults + 2 Children) £15. A £1.50 booking fee will apply. Group bookings (15+) can be made via Nerve Centre.

The Brick Wonders Exhibition is part of the City of Culture Legacy Programme and further events are planned in February including the Space Camp at the Tower Museum on Saturday 20th and the Colour of Science at the Foyleside Shopping Centre on Saturday 27th.
