Wrap up Christmas at Derry’s Winterland Market

15 November 2017

An amazing Winterland Market showcasing the best of Derry craft, food and drink will be a key part of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s line up of events for Christmas.

The Winderland Market, aimed at showcasing the best of local and visiting craft trade and giving locals and visitors the chance to pick up some unique gift ideas and sample some of craft beers and gins, will be at Guildhall Square from Thursday 14 to Sunday 17 December.

Hailed as the ultimate traditional Derry Christmas experience, the Market will feature up to 30 traders from a wide range of craft and food sectors offering a wide range of Christmas gifts and foods. The market is the perfect opportunity to get into the festive spirit and help with prepping your Christmas shopping and cooking for that special day.

A key attraction for the kids will be the presence of Bjorn the Bear, a life-sized majestic polar creature that blinks, sniffs and makes real sounds all within a sculpted inflatable ice environment to help him feel at home. His show is based on real science and is an amazing addition to our market programme that is bound to get the children into the festive cheer... He will make a series of special appearances at the Market on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 December at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm.

For the adults there will be craft beer and gins stalls by local specialists – Sippy Fest and RooRoo Ltd, while nightly live musical entertainment will be provided by the Guildhall Taphouse, making it the perfect location to meet up with friends or work colleague for that well-earned Christmas drink.

Deputy Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr John Boyle says the Winterland Market is a great way to showcase the city’s craft and artisan offering and a major attraction for visitors who are coming to the city for a pre-Christmas get away with our very favourable Euro/Sterling exchange rate.

“This is a fantastic addition to our Christmas retail offering and one of a large number of events organized by Derry City and Strabane District Council as part of our Christmas campaign. It is a great opportunity to showcase what the city and district has to offer in terms of family entertainment and great shopping festive experience.”

Among the events taking place over the Christmas period is the Christmas Switch On (Derry) on Thursday 23 November from 6-8pm;  The Christmas Switch On (Strabane) on Saturday 25 November from 2pm – 5.30pm, the Sound of Light and Christmas Procession on Friday 01 and Saturday 02 December from 6-7pm; and the Strabane Christmas Fayre on Sunday 03 December from 1-6pm as well as the Wonder Windows Trail on Saturday 09, Sunday 10, Saturday 16, Sunday 17, Friday 22 and Saturday 23 December from 5.30-7.30pm.
