Youth 19 Golden Events hosts announced

Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Youth 19 initiative has announced the successful applicants who will receive grant aid funding to host Golden Events as part of the initiative’s wider programme this year.
The five successful event hosts are the Rainbow Child and Family Centre, Celtronic 2019, In Your Space Circus, the Nerve Centre and the Verbal Arts Centre who will host one of the monthly Youth 19 Golden Events which will include festivals, workshops, performances and exhibitions.
Youth 19 is a year dedicated to young people aged 12 – 24 where Council will work with young people and partners to promote the voices, needs, priorities and rights of young people.
The initiative aims to highlight the positive contributions that young people make to our community, supporting young people to take a leading role and make change happen.
The Youth 19 programme is being backed by over £1.5 million in funding secured from a range of sources including DCSDC, The National Lottery Community Fund, the North West Regional Development Fund and PEACE IV.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor John Boyle, thanked all the organisations who had made submissions to host a Golden Event.
“Congratulations to all the successful bidding organisations in this initiative and best wishes to them as they begin co-ordinating some of the Golden events in the Youth 19 programme,” he said.
“These golden events can play a key role in connecting with our young people, and providing a fun and alternative way to get them involved in the planning, design and delivery of activities for Youth19.
“I would encourage young people to take ownership of the year by getting involved in the events and playing an active role in some genuinely exciting opportunities.”
Claire Lynch, Children and Young People’s Co-ordinator at Derry City and Strabane District Council, said the panel were particularly impressed with the high standard of applicants.
“We had 19 applications to host a golden event and we are delighted to offer five organisations the grant aid to help make their exciting plans a reality,” she said.
“The standard of applications was exceptionally high and we would like to thank everyone who took the time to propose their ideas.
"We will continue to connect with all the applicants to help us engage with young people at a community level and reach out to as many people as possible this year.”
The Rainbow Child and Family Centre will host a two day well being festival in April with activities, performances and speakers tailored to promote the five steps to wellbeing (Take notice, connect, be active, give and learn).
In June the existing Celtronic festival will use its funding to expand its reach and develop its offering through a mix of events featuring local, national and international DJs, producers and live acts.
The In Your Space Circus Carnival of Colours 2019 will bring young people to the forefront of the planning programming and delivery of the event and offer opportunities for local young people to perform.
In September the Nerve Centre will host the Bastion Youth Festival, an innovative three day festival using Derry’s built heritage as the backdrop including the Walls, Tower Museum and Ebrington to stage a VR/ AR, filmmaking, gaming, animation, music and digital fabrication events and hands on masterclasses.
The Verbal Arts Centre will host the Youthful Voices Programme in November which aims to show young people the relevance of poetry in modern life through workshops, guest speakers and fun hands on interactive masterclasses.
Other golden events in the Youth 19 programme are the Spring Carnival in March, the Youth 19 Arts Festival in July, Halloween and a closing event in December, yong people aged 12-24 can help to shape these events and activities by joining the Events and Marketing Youth Panel.
Youth 19 has been co-designed with young people, for young people and there are a number of opportunities for you to get involved no matter how much time or experience you have.
