flybmi celebrates successful first year between City of Derry Airport and London Stansted
03 May 2018
flybmi marks the first anniversary of its successful City of Derry Airport to London Stansted route and is celebrating by offering flights from just £45 one way in May. The service, which was the fastest selling in the airline’s history before it had even started, has gone from strength to strength over the past year.
flybmi commenced the route from Stansted to Derry last year, offering two flights daily. This has allowed business travellers to make the round trip to and from Derry to London in a day, without the need for costly overnight stays, and flybmi believes it to have been a key factor in increasing the route’s popularity.
Commenting on the success, Jochen Schnadt, Chief Commercial Officer, of flybmi said: “The Stansted - Derry route is our first departure from a London airport, so we are delighted with its strong performance. It is a great example of our strategic focus on key trade and business flight links, and how our aim to provide a quality service at convenient times is fuelling customer demand. The North West region of Ireland is currently undergoing a sustained period of investment and economic growth, and the success of the route in its first year demonstrates how vital it is for businesses in the region to be well connected to the UK capital.”
An economic, creative and cultural hub, Derry is Northern Ireland’s second city and was named the 2013 UK City of Culture thanks to its winning combination of rich cultural heritage and vibrant social scene. The only completely walled city in Ireland and the UK, it is a bustling, youthful city with great restaurants, bars, museums and more. It is also the gateway to the wider North West and its spectacular coastline, which is regularly used for big film productions including the latest Star Wars franchise and Game of Thrones.
Airport Manager, Charlene Shongo stated: “We are absolutely delighted to be celebrating flybmi’s first anniversary at City of Derry Airport today. flybmi provide a direct air link with London which is imperative for the North West region – and our business community. The very popular double daily service has enabled travellers throughout the North West to depart City of Derry Airport early morning and return the same evening as well as acting as a catalyst for in-bound business and leisure tourism to the region. BMI continues to offer customers a convenient, all-inclusive service where 23kg bags fly for free and passengers can enjoy complimentary inflight drinks and snacks.”
Mrs Shongo concluded by stating that City of Derry Airport has become the airport of choice for the North West of Ireland, offering both convenience and excellent customer service and would encourage all travellers within the local catchment to think about flight options from their local airport when making future travel arrangements, asking air passengers to “Think Local and Choose CoDA” whenever they can. “We have fantastic facilities on our doorstep and it is essential that everyone takes advantage of their local airport for their travel plans when possible” she said.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Maolíosa McHugh, said: “I am delighted to mark the first anniversary of the BMI partnership with CoDA. The service has proven extremely popular and offers a vital connection which is of real benefit to the local business community. Council is committed to developing connectivity to the North West region, and we will continue to progress our plans for further route development and strengthening our partnership with companies such as BMI.”
