Street Naming and Property Numbering

Naming and numbering of properties

The Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) (NI) Order 1995 affords Council discretion to approve numbers, name streets and provide street signage including street names expressed in languages other than English.  The Building Control Department of Derry City and Strabane District Council is responsible for this function.

Property Numbering

In accordance with the legislation Council can allocate numbers to the properties on a particular road or street.

Street Naming

To apply for a new street name you need to make an application to us when the development starts on site.
The developer, architect, builder or housing association can make the application.
The proposed naming needs to meet the criteria set out in the Street Naming and Property Numbering Policy.

The application should be accompanied by:

  1. A site location map
  2. A site layout showing the arrangement of the buildings on site and their site numbers. (Note: Site numbers are numbers for the buildings on site and are not the postal numbers).
  3. In the case of multi-storey apartment buidings, floor plans showing the entrances and site numbers.

Applications should be sent electronically to [email protected] or in person at one of our Council Offices in Derry or Strabane.

Dual Language Street Signs

The Council has the power to erect street name plates in dual language, English and another language.  Derry City and Strabane District Council will erect street name plates in English and in another language, where certain conditions are met.

The Street Naming and Property Numbering Policy details the process for requesting a dual language name plate and how decisions are made.

Applications for dual language street name plates can be made by an occupier of the street who is registered on the electoral role, or Council. To apply please complete a dual language application form and return to [email protected], or in person at one of our Council Offices in Derry or Strabane.
